Three die in violence during political transfer
Bangladesh ? Violent clashes between the outgoing prime minister’s supporters and opposition activists Friday left three people dead and another 100 injured, news reports said.
The clashes were reported in the capital, Dhaka, and at least a dozen other towns across the country. The violence erupted immediately after Prime Minister Khaleda Zia finished a televised speech, according to Channel-i TV station.
More than 20,000 security officials, including police and paramilitary forces, had been deployed Friday in Dhaka to prepare for the end of Zia’s five-year term, which expires at midnight. Police said additional forces would be called to the capital if needed.
A caretaker government is scheduled to take charge today and is constitutionally bound to have new elections in 90 days.
In her address to the nation Friday, Zia said her four-party coalition would cooperate with the new government. However, she faced last-minute street protests from an opposition alliance that objects to the transfer of power to a former member of Zia’s party.
