Huard may not play Sunday

Groin injury sidelines QB; rookie Croyle may start

? Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard, nursing a sore groin muscle, did not practice Friday, and rookie Brodie Croyle may get his first NFL start Sunday against Seattle.

Huard, who has played quite well the past five weeks while Trent Green recovers from a severe concussion, said he hoped to be able to play. Coach Herm Edwards said it would be a game-day decision.

“If Damon’s the quarterback, that would be outstanding,” Edwards said. “But if he’s not and Brodie Croyle has to play, then Brodie Croyle will be fine. He’s going to play.”

If Croyle gets the nod, the noon kickoff between the Chiefs and Seahawks would feature two quarterbacks making their first NFL starts. Fourth-year backup Seneca Wallace is scheduled to start for Seattle because Matt Hasselbeck injured his knee last week.

A third-round draft choice out of Alabama, Croyle’s only appearance was in mop-up duty at the end of a 45-7 loss to Pittsburgh. He was 3-for-7 for 23 yards and two interceptions, including one that was returned 30 yards for the Steelers’ last touchdown.

“This is what you come here for,” Croyle said. “If it comes down to me on Sunday, we’ll be ready to go. Right now, Damon is looking good. You’ve just got to prepare like it’s going to be your opportunity. It’s no different than any other week.”

Green did not begin even light practice until this week and is not expected to be ready for another two or three weeks.

Kansas City's Damon Huard looks to throw against San Diego on Sunday. Huard injured his groin in practice this week.

Huard underwent an MRI Thursday night and was reassured there was no tear in the muscle.

Given his first chance to play after going six years without a start, he has responded well. Since Green was injured in the season opener on Sept. 10, Huard has hit 104 of 163 passes for 1,163 yards, with seven touchdowns and only one interception.

The Chiefs (3-3) have gone 3-2 in the stretch and stayed competitive in the AFC West.

“It’s frustrating. It’s very frustrating,” Huard said. “But this is a part of football, and sometimes it happens. I don’t know why it happens.”

He said he felt the injury late in practice on Thursday when he stepped into the pocket to make a throw.

He spent Friday’s short practice just watching and did not try to jog or work out.

“Right now, I’m just going to rest it and see how I feel on Sunday and hopefully go play ball,” he said. “I’m going to get treatment. I’m going to listen to our medical staff, and hopefully I’ll be ready to roll Sunday. It’s feeling better today than it was yesterday.”

Edwards said he was not concerned that the Pittsburgh experience had damaged the confidence of his rookie quarterback.
