West-side greenbelt park gets approval

Work will begin soon on a new park in west Lawrence.

City commissioners gave the Parks and Recreation Department approval to bid work for the construction of a greenbelt park east of George Williams Way and Harvard Road.

The first phase of the park will include a recreation trail and playground equipment. But to stretch the city’s $200,000 budget, Parks and Recreation leaders had proposed paving only a small portion of the trail and leaving the rest in a natural state.

Commissioners approved the plan on a 5-0 vote. Work on cutting brush for the trail should begin this fall. The entire project should be completed in the spring.
