Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 24, 1906: “Registration books for the election will close in two days with only about 1,200 registered. This town should have at least 2,500 registrations. ‘They just don’t seem to care,’ the city clerk said of the lack of interest in the November voting. : All the schools are now open but this first morning of classes after the diphtheria problem saw only about half as many pupils as usual turning out. Many do not want their children in school until the total danger is passed, and there have been several new cases of late. Examinations are being given to every pupil who enters a school.”
