Matteson charges to Funai golf lead

Durant trails by one shot, Rose by two after three rounds

? Troy Matteson has turned his rookie season into a rousing success. He did it in four weeks, too.

Matteson birdied the last two holes Saturday, finished with a 7-under 65 and had a one-shot lead at 19-under 197 after the third round of the Funai Classic at Disney.

Joe Durant (64) was second at 18 under, one stroke ahead of first- and second-round leader Justin Rose (72). Twenty others – including Davis Love III, Mark Calcavecchia and Mike Weir – were within six shots of the leader.

Matteson, meanwhile, is starting to get accustomed to being on the leaderboard. He tied for eighth four weeks ago at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic, then had a sixth-place finish the following week in Greensboro. The two-week spree moved him from 172nd on the money list to 143rd – in position to retain his full-time tour card.

Michellie Jones of Australia, who was second last year, won the women’s race in 9:18:31. Stadler and Jones each received $110,000 for their wins.

One week after a powerful earthquake rocked Hawaii, the Ironman race went off almost as if the 6.7 magnitude temblor hadn’t hit. The only significant change made was that part of the bicycle route was reduced to one lane.

Negotiators meet again

New York – Negotiators for baseball players and owners bargained again Saturday as they intensified efforts to reach a new labor contract before the end of the World Series.

The sides’ Friday session didn’t end until 3 a.m. Saturday. Several people on both sides with knowledge of the talks said it was possible an agreement could be reached next week.

The current contract runs out Dec. 19, and reaching agreement before the expiration would be a landmark for baseball, which had eight work stoppages from 1972-95.

In August 2002, the sides agreed to a deal hours before players were set to strike.

Kings’ new coach arrested

Sacramento, Calif. – Eric Musselman, in his first season as coach of the Sacramento Kings, was arrested on a drunken-driving charge early Saturday, hours after his team’s exhibition victory over the Utah Jazz.

He was released without bail from Sacramento County Main Jail at dawn, the Sheriff’s Department said. He was cited for misdemeanor driving under the influence.

Musselman was pulled over at 2:15 a.m. about 11â2 miles from the State Capitol, according to the arrest report. The 41-year-old coach failed three sobriety tests performed by the California Highway Patrol and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11, the arrest report said. The legal limit is 0.08.

Musselman has coached just four preseason games since being hired in June. His arrest comes at a particularly inopportune time for the franchise.
