Law enforcement report

¢ Douglas County Sheriff’s officers on Friday evening arrested a 55-year-old Ottawa man suspected of committing a sex crime.

Lt. Kari Wempe, a sheriff spokeswoman, said officers received a 911 call from the 2100 section of North 100 Road in the southeastern part of the county. Officers found the victim and the suspect in the area, Wempe said.

No other information was available Friday night, as the man was booked into jail on suspicion of attempting to commit rape, aggravated battery, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated assault, according to jail records. Wempe said officers would forward details of the investigation to Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office for review.

¢ Police say an unidentified woman walked into the Army National Guard Office at 23rd and Louisiana streets about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, poured a can of tomato sauce on the floor and left a threatening note. She was described as about 5 feet 5 inches tall with a thin build. She was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over her head. Police ask anyone with information to call them at 832-7501 or the TIPS hot line at 843-TIPS.

Burglaries and thefts reported

¢ An employee is suspected of stealing $1,200 in cash from J.C. Penney Co., 3311 Iowa, between Sept. 20 and Thursday, according to a report. Police have interviewed the suspect, a 51-year-old Lawrence woman, and sent the report to Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office for review.

¢ Johnson County Sheriff’s officers on Friday were searching for an 18-year-old Gardner man as a possible suspect in several car burglaries overnight Thursday in Edgerton, said Lt. Mark Hartman, a sheriff spokesman.

Hartman said at least 10 Edgerton residents reported items stolen from vehicles, such as CD players, CDs and money. Several of the vehicles were unlocked, he said. Gardner Police officers found a vehicle Friday morning that contained several items, which burglary victims later identified, Hartman said.

Officers were still searching for the man Friday evening.

Injury accidents

¢ Two people went to the hospital by ambulance Thursday afternoon after a wreck at Sixth and Mississippi streets.

The accident happened at 3:14 p.m. Laura A. Grinage, 39, Lawrence, was driving south on Mississippi Street in a Ford Expedition when she tried to turn left to go east onto Sixth Street and collided with a Ford Taurus driven by Rosemary A. Munger, 38, Lawrence. Munger and a passenger, Elizabeth A. Munger, 13, both were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with injuries. Both were wearing a seat belt. Grinage was cited for failure to yield the right of way, according to a report.
