Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 21, 1906: “The board of education decided last night to reopen the high school and the seventh and eighth grades. If no new cases of diphtheria develop the coming week, all the grades will resume the following Monday. Doctors plan to be on hand to make sure no infected youngsters get back in classes. : The Oklahoma football team brought nearly 100 followers here for the game with Kansas, which KU won 16-0 to boost its season record to 5-0. The faithful for the Sooners left quite disappointed as Kansas ran its record to 4-0 in the series. : Every effort is being made to emphasize cleanliness in the aftermath of the diphtheria troubles but doctors say that people should not feel ashamed because there have been as many cases in immaculate houses as in less-tidy ones. So far, we seem fortunate there were only eight deaths. “
