Last week’s results: Ottawa lost to Blue Valley, 68-0; Blue Valley West beat Gardner-Edgerton, 42-20

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Quick hits: The Cyclones lose one day of preparation, not exactly what a team needs when trying to fix a defense that’s surrendering an area-high 51.0 ppg.

Friday’s games

Spring Hill (3-4, 0-1) at Baldwin (3-4, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Spring Hill lost to Eudora, 48-6; Baldwin lost to De Soto, 22-13

Quick hits: After losing their district openers, the Broncos and Bulldogs find themselves in a must-win game in order to stay alive in the hunt for a Class 4A state playoff berth.

Tonganoxie (7-0, 1-0) at Atchison (7-0, 1-0)

Last week’s results: Tonganoxie beat Perry-Lecompton, 21-0; Atchison beat Jefferson West, 49-27

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Quick hits: Something has to give as the Chieftains, surrendering an area-low 7.3 ppg, go on the road to face an Atchison team that’s topped the 35-point barrier in five of its seven victories.

Perry-Lecompton (5-2, 0-1) at Jefferson West (3-4, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Perry-Lecompton lost to Tonganoxie, 21-0; Jefferson West lost to Atchison, 49-27

Quick hits: The Kaws are looking for a bounce-back game after dropping two straight following a 5-0 start, and need a victory to remain in the hunt for a return trip to the Class 4A state playoffs.

Wamego (3-4, 0-1) at Santa Fe Trail (3-4, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Wamego lost to Topeka Hayden, 21-0; Santa Fe Trail lost to Royal Valley, 20-0

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Quick hits: With perennial power Topeka Hayden waiting in the wings in Week 9, the Chargers know they must take care of business against an inconsistent Wamego squad to have any shot at the Class 4A state playoffs.

Wellsville (0-7, 0-1) at Pomona (0-7, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Wellsville lost to Central Heights, 42-20; Pomona lost to Burlington, 56-13

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Quick hits: Whichever team puts together some semblance of a defense figures to survive this battle of winless squads. The Eagles are surrendering 44.1 ppg, while the Indians aren’t much better at 37.6 ppg.

Oskaloosa (3-4, 0-1) at Jefferson North (5-2, 1-0)

Last week’s results: Oskaloosa lost to Silver Lake, 48-0; Jefferson North beat McLouth, 21-19

Last year’s meeting: Oskaloosa won, 22-21

Quick hits: The good news for the Bears is they now draw one of the teams they beat in 2005. The bad news is, after an 0-2 start, the Chargers are 5-0 and have the inside track on a Class 3A playoff berth.

Silver Lake (7-0, 1-0) at McLouth (3-4, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Silver Lake beat Oskaloosa, 48-0; McLouth lost to Jefferson North, 21-19

Last year’s meeting: Silver Lake won, 21-8, in Class 3A state playoffs

Quick hits: Last season, these two squads met in a tense second-round state matchup. The Eagles again appear strong, while the Bulldogs likely need a win to stay in the postseason chase.

Overland Park Aquinas (6-1, 1-0) at Mill Valley (5-2, 0-1)

Last week’s results: Overland Park Aquinas beat Kansas City Harmon, 68-8; Mill Valley lost to Roeland Park Miege, 20-14

Last year’s meeting: Did not play

Quick hits: A tough district draw is doing the Jaguars no favors. After losing a tight contest in last week’s district opener, Mill Valley now must face a consensus top-five Class 5A program, and faces the possibility of seeing its playoff hopes dashed.
