New look Hurricanes get set for season’s finish

Out with the old and in with the new.

If one was to watch a Lawrence youth football game at Youth Sports Inc., they would notice the Hurricanes wearing new black and orange jerseys.

The Hurricanes used to wear blue and white jerseys but now run up and down the field with a little more fashion and style.

The new jerseys have orange numerals outlined with white trim, and streaks of orange run from the side up to the collar on the jersey.

The players became enamored with the jerseys from the moment they saw them.

“When they took them out of the box we were all screaming and stuff,”fifth-grader and Hurricane football player Keith Loneker said.

While the jerseys immediately impressed the team with their fashionable looks, Loneker said they also fit just right.

“They feel more comfortable,” Loneker said. “They have better sleeves.”

As a fullback and linebacker for the Hurricanes, Loneker needed all the comfort and arm room he could get. The fifth-grader plays two of the toughest positions on the field.

But Loneker said he has one position that he preferred to the other.

“I like linebacker better,” Loneker said. “I’m kind of a defensive guy. I like to tackle.”

Not far away from him on the defensive side of the ball is nose guard Reese Randall.

Randall said he likes the new-look jerseys mainly because of the new colors, and the similarities to the jerseys worn in the movie “The Longest Yard.”

But the Hurricane jerseys are not the only feature for players and fans to look at.

The helmets have the Hurricane logo on the side, and stickers cover the backs of the helmets.

These stickers designate good performances on the field, including fumble recoveries, big hits, good runs, touchdowns and hustle plays. And if a player gets five tackles, he is rewarded with a skull sticker.

Randall proudly showed the many stickers decorated on the back of his helmet before he and his teammates took the field for practice.

And when asked if the uniforms could possibly make the Hurricanes play faster and meaner out on the football field, Loneker paused for a moment, and was hesitant in his response.

“They look cool, they look meaner,” Loneker said. “But I’m not really sure.”

But Randall, however, was quite certain.

“Yeah!” he shouted.
