Cordley School won the first-place trophy in the K-5 Division of the Prairie View High School Chess Tournament on Oct. 7 in La Cygne. Garnering individual medals were Roscoe Bradt, third grade, fourth; McCarthy Fitch, third grade, sixth; George Wedge, fourth grade, eighth; and Colin Bradt, first grade, 12th.

Marty and Wendy Feltner, Lyndon, announce the birth of their son, Elijah Quinn Feltner, who was born Sept. 26, 2006, at 4:42 p.m. He weighed eight pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 inches long.

He has a sister, Cleo MacKenzie Feltner. His grandparents are Marvin and Mary Ann Feltner, and Richard Nehrbass, all of Lyndon, and Kathy and Roger Kugler, Lawrence.

Elijah shares his birthday with great-grandmother Doris Hughes, Lawrence.

Wellsville Elementary School teachers Heather Heath, Linda Nyhart, Lori Smilie and Tony Taylor, and Betty Friedel, a teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Ottawa, attended a workshop Oct. 5 at Emporia State University to help their students improve their math skills.

The workshop, called “Building a Solid Foundation: Math Facts, Computation & Problem Solving,” was at the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. The one-day workshop drew teachers from east-central Kansas.

Friedel and Jan Alexander, who also teaches at Lincoln Elementary, attended a workshop to help their students improve basic literacy skills Oct. 9 at Emporia State. The workshop was titled “Rainbowing Readiness: ‘See’ Reading and Writing with Color!”

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Recital will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. Students who will be performing are Madeline Dethloff, Karen McCain, Jeffrey Chen, Di Xie, Kelsey Ranjbar, Ellie Young, Wyatt Bugh, Yihan Li, Cal Young, Eric Palmquist, Nora Elbayoumy, Sarah Long, Guoxiong Liu, Alex Hamm, Jaxon Turner, Kirsten Turner, Taylor Hodge and Genevieve Rucker. They represent the studios of Elaine de San Miguel, Carol Cook, Mary Cornwell and Linda Neigert.

The descendants of John Bernard Carl Torneden and Caroline Friederike Emilie Altenbernd Torneden met for their 72nd annual Torneden Family Reunion on Sept. 24. Sixty-five family members and guests met for a basket dinner at the Kanwaka Township Hall.

The host families for the reunion were Jeanne Torneden and family and Raymond and Caroline Torneden Flory and family.

Those who attended from Lawrence were Bob, Lindsey and Terri Torneden Durgan, Raymond and Caroline Torneden Flory, Patty Neis Johnston, Mike Kessler, Rodney Kessler, Alice Torneden Shirk, John and Artletia Torneden Stewart, Daniel Torneden, Harold Torneden, Jeanne Torneden and Jeanne Torneden Waisner.

A moment of silence was held for four family members lost in the past year: Fern Kahn Burkle, Floyd Torneden, William Torneden and Etta Wickey. Gifts were presented to the youngest and oldest family members in attendance. Those receiving the gifts were Mikayla Smith, 9, and Frank Henak, 94.

Many family members brought items and pictures to share. In addition, updated copies of the Torneden family tree were distributed.

The host family for the 2007 Torneden Family Reunion will be Marvin and Myrtle Torneden Jones and family.

Anne Kettle, Lawrence, a senior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., will perform with the college orchestra during its 2006 fall tour. Kettle plays French horn in the 92-member ensemble. The nine-city tour includes a stop in Houston.

Ron Stauffer, Baldwin, has entered three Montadale sheep in the 33rd annual North American International Livestock Exposition. The exposition is recognized as the world’s largest purebred livestock show and will be Nov. 4-17 in Louisville, Ky.

Oskaloosa High School has announced its Students of the Month for October. They are Brandon Hawks, 11th grade; Carol Allen, 12th grade; Tyler Leonhard, 12th grade; and Jason Rodriguez, 12th grade. The students will be treated to lunch at Old Chicago in Lawrence.

Jarod and Niki Busch, Olathe, announce the birth of their daughter, Karsyn McKenna, on Sept. 20 at Olathe Medical Center. Her maternal grandparents are Joe and Bev Mater, Lawrence. Her paternal grandparents are Jeff and Debbie Busch, Olathe.

Rebecca Beaulieu, Lawrence, received a $1,000 college scholarship given by the National Resource Center for Parents with Disabilities at Through the Looking Glass. Selection criteria included academic performance, community service, letters of recommendation and an essay describing the experience of growing up with a parent with a disability.

The Old West Lawrence Applause Committee honored four homeowners for their efforts in beautifying their properties.

Fred Johnson, 638 La., has new paint on the house and garage, added a new roof and colorful garden beds. Erin Quested, 818 Ala., restored and painted the outside of her home. Giles and Mariana Thompson, 847 Mo., painted their house, added flower beds and a new metal roof. Jack and Ann Ozegovic, 816 Ark., worked with friends Matt and Judy Vetch to plan new plantings and a retaining wall for their front yard and nearby area. The stonework was done by Karl Ramberg.
