Police and sheriff’s deputies took two Free State High School seniors into custody Wednesday after a drug dog found marijuana in a vehicle in the FSHS parking lot, said Julie Boyle, the Lawrence school district’s communications director.

The two students, a male and female, were questioned after a drug dog helped investigators find “marijuana and other drug paraphernalia” in the male student’s vehicle. Both students were later released.

The male has been suspended, and the female returned to school.

Further details about the case weren’t available Wednesday afternoon, including what prompted the drug dog’s visit, how much marijuana was found and whether there are more suspects.

FSHS principal Joe Snyder said the school cooperated with the city-county drug enforcement unit that handled the case.

“We always try to make sure that we make every effort to keep our grounds and our buildings drug free,” he said. “We’re really glad that this was taken care of and done really well.”
