GOP failed test

To the editor:

For political reasons, the Republican Party ran on a platform of family values, morality and the Christian religion. They presented their party as approved by God over political opponents and repeatedly employ religious buzzwords to persuade us to elect them to Congress for their self-proclaimed moral virtues.

With the recent revelation of Republican Congressman Foley’s warped and twisted attempts at sexual relationships with children entrusted to the care of Congress, the Republican Party has been presented with a golden chance to truly live up to their self-proclaimed religion, not talk about it.

Not just the Republican Party, but also Christian leaders – even the president himself – had an opportunity to put a child’s welfare above politics, above self-serving causes. They all should be shouting their outrage and demanding accountability, as true moral Christians are obligated to do at times like these.

Instead, there is deafening silence from all of them. The Republican leadership and congressional representatives hastily circled their wagons to blame everyone else, dredging up ancient history, steadfastly refusing to take any personal responsibility or blame for what happened on their watch by one of their own.

They have been put to the test and miserably failed. They selfishly chose political interest above the safety of children. They have proven they can no longer be trusted to speak the truth or live up to their promises; that they are no longer accountable to their constituents.

The Bible has a name for people who do this. They are called “hypocrites.”
