Home woes continue for Wildcats

? Dirtied and helmet in hand, Micah Mason, Baker University’s leading tackler, stammered off the field Saturday afternoon at Liston Stadium.

“I don’t want to talk,” Mason said, “not after that game.”

It was that kind of performance as Missouri Valley trounced Baker, 28-0, putting an unwanted wrinkle in the Wildcats’ homecoming festivities. Baker (2-4) was shut out for the second consecutive game and dropped to 0-3 at home this season.

Pick your favorite statistic because Missouri Valley dominated every facet of the game. First downs: 22 to 6. Total plays: 70 to 46. Rushing yards: 95 to minus-16. Total yards: 448 to 64.

“We were inept,” Baker coach Mike Grossner said.

The Vikings (6-0) led 21-0 at halftime, but interceptions by linebacker Brad Page and defensive back Brandon Hubbard halted drives. The Wildcats crossed the 50-yard line only once in the first half, and the drive occurred on the last series. Baker’s offense stalled, however, resulting in a missed 55-yard field-goal attempt.

Baker University's Jeremiah Gress tugs on Missouri Valley's Ryan Ross. The Wildcats dropped their homecoming game Saturday, 28-0, at Liston Stadium in Baldwin.

The loss stung particularly hard on a day when the school honored some of its former stars at halftime.

“There were a lot of former football players here,” quarterback Mack Brown said. “They had to leave with a sour taste in their mouth.”

Missouri Valley running back Robert Holmes provided some of that nasty tang. Holmes, a sophomore who entered the game as the Heart of America Athletic Conference’s second-leading rusher, gained 83 yards on 21 carries in the first half but did not carry the ball in the second half.

Holmes scored the Vikings’ first touchdown on a one-yard rush near the end of the first quarter. Quarterback Jason Shoulders, who completed 20 of 26 passes for 301 yards, threw touchdowns to John Brinley, Nate Knight and Eric Brown.

On the other side, Brown completed 11 of 26 passes for 80 yards. But he had to go against a strong Vikings pass rush that sacked him five times, including back-to-back sacks with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter.

“We knew they’d bring a lot of pressure,” Brown said. “But we weren’t able to counter it.”

Baker will return to action Saturday when it travels to Olathe to play MidAmerica Nazarene.
