Hughes has his way with Bobcats

? Quarterback Jeff Hughes accounted for four touchdowns as the Tonganoxie High football team remained unbeaten with a 35-0 victory against Basehor-Linwood on Friday night.

The Chieftains improved to 6-0.

“Our offense was designed to get him the ball,” Tonganoxie coach Mark Elston said of Hughes. “He’s extremely good in the open field. But our offensive line opened some huge holes.”

Hughes had touchdown runs of 57 and 82 yards, and threw for two scores.

The Tonganoxie defense has given up only a combined six points in its last two games.

Tonganoxie will play on the road at Perry-Lecompton next Friday.

Kansas City Piper 24, Perry-Lecompton 14

Kansas City, Kan. – E.J. James ran for two touchdowns to lead the Pirates to the upset victory.

Piper had been shut out in its previous two games, but it gave the Kaws (5-1) their first loss.

Quarterback Caleb Denton accounted for two Perry-Lecompton touchdowns.

The Kaws will play host to Tonganoxie next Friday.

Osawatomie – Aaron Mills had an 80-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third as the Bulldogs held off the Trojans.

Despite Mills’ heroics, Baldwin (3-3) found itself behind in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to prevail.

Baldwin will play host to De Soto next Friday.

De Soto – A.J. Fruits had five touchdown runs to lead the Blazers past the Wildcats.

De Soto coach Brad Scott said his defense had no answer for Fruits.

“They feature the tailback,” Scott said. “They did a nice job of getting him the ball.”

De Soto (3-3) actually led at halftime. Gardner-Edgerton scored the last three touchdowns to seal the victory.

De Soto will travel to Baldwin next Friday.

Oskaloosa – Boone Heston had 143 yards rushing and a TD as the Bears (3-3) rediscovered their winning touch.

Donnie Brock added 66 rushing yards, and Mitch Lowe rushed for 53 yards for a very balanced Oskaloosa attack.

The Bears will travel to Silver Lake next Friday.

McLouth – Josh Barnes had three touchdown passes as the Rams beat the Bulldogs.

Trevor Keling was a bright spot for McLouth (3-3), rushing for a 33-yard touchdown in the final quarter. Keling had 79 yards rushing on 18 carries.

McLouth will play host to Jefferson County North next Friday.
