Unity Gallery announces exhibit

“Reflections from a Durable Girl,” by Lawrence resident Toni Brou, will open Saturday at Unity Gallery, 900 Madeline Lane.

Brou, a Kansas University alumna, worked as a graphic designer before a series of losses, including the deaths of her father and husband in 1999 and 2000. It was during this period that Toni adopted the mantra “the sun always rises” and her current tongue-in-cheek fine folk-art style. She combines polymer clay, papier-mâche, acrylics and found objects to create mixed media assemblages. Her use of found objects is a symbol for hope and redemption, as well as a nod to her father.

The exhibit will be displayed until Nov. 11.
