Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World of Oct. 5, 1906: “In an interesting football game yesterday, the KU team defeated the College of Emporia 25-0. At no time during the 40 minutes of play was the Jayhawker goal in danger. Fumbling was characteristic of both teams, however. KU dominated from start to finish. : William Allen White of Kansas newspaper fame has now bought a magazine, the American Magazine, and is assembling a staff. : Some miscreant set fire prematurely to a ‘box house’ that the state firemen here in convention were supposed to douse in an exhibition today for Old Home Week. As usual, the blame was placed on students. The firemen gathered to end the blaze and drew a good crowd. : Three more diphtheria quarantines have been made here and the total number of cases has risen to 61. But doctors say the ‘epidemic’ remains mild and that schools do not need to be closed. Early on, there were four deaths, but there have been none since.”
