Democrat Bob Docking of Arkansas City, a former Lawrence banker, planned to kick off his gubernatorial campaign in Lawrence with a barbecue. A number of top Democratic personalities were due for the event. The door was swinging open for an unprecedented four two-year terms by Docking, whose father George of Lawrence had previously served as governor.
