KU volleyball falls again

The losses just continue to mount for a Kansas University volleyball squad that started off the season 7-1.

The Jayhawks picked up their sixth loss over the last seven games in a three-game sweep (30-28, 30-22, 30-24) by Iowa State at the Horejsi Center on Saturday.

“Crazy things are happening in the league this year – people are beating people with upsets all over the place,” KU’s Emily Brown said. “We knew it was a tough conference from the beginning, but we’ve got to kind of make our move now.”

The slide began following their upset sweep of No. 16 BYU – the Cougars’ first loss of the season – in the Jayhawk Classic.

But even the Jayhawks’ one victory during the stretch was hard to come by, as it took them five games to beat Texas A&M at home.

Just like many of the six previous games, the Iowa State match saw the Jayhawks committing error after error, aiding the aggressive Cyclones.

“We did just enough wrong to keep us a little bit off balance in each game,” Kansas coach Ray Bechard said. “Game two, we missed too many serves. Game three, we had too many errors. So, as we know, in this conference that’s not going to get it done.”

Erin Boeve’s 17 kills, one solo block and three assisted blocks led Iowa State.

Kansas University's Brittany Williams (10) spikes between Iowa State's Katie Jessen (15) and Erin Boeve (7). The Cyclones swept the Jayhawks on Saturday in Horejsi Family Athletics Center.

“They are one of the more physical teams in the league, and the longer the rally would go, sometimes the more predictable you get,” Bechard said. “They had two big, physical kids out there waiting for us.”

Though things only seem to build in front of the Jayhawks in the midst of Big 12 Conference play, Bechard is looking at years past to keep his team calm.

“We’ve been to the NCAA Tournament the last three years in a row, but every, every year we had a stretch that’s been rough,” the Kansas coach said. “Every team goes through it. … If you can move on, continue to train and cut down on some of those unforced errors, you give yourself a chance.”

Brown said she anticipated that the team’s fortunes would finally begin to swing their way when they travel to No. 19 Missouri on Wednesday.

“It’s coming Wednesday, for sure on Wednesday – I can feel it. It’ll be a good win for us,” the Baldwin native said with a laugh.
