Accident closes 31st Street

A 22-year-old Lawrence man was injured in a two-vehicle accident Saturday evening that closed 31st Street for more than hour.

Lt. Kari Wempe, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said the man was driving his vehicle to the east after 6 p.m. when it ran onto the shoulder for an unknown reason about 100 yards west of the intersection with Louisiana Street. When he over-corrected, the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a westbound vehicle almost head-on, Wempe said.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was not injured. A passenger in the injured driver’s vehicle reportedly left the scene before officers arrived. Sheriff’s officers are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the accident, Wempe said.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical workers took the injured driver to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, she said. Those involved were not identified, and officers continue to investigate, Wempe said.
