A random sniff of vehicles in a hotel parking lot is among the duties performed in recent days by Levi, one of two drug-sniffing dogs owned by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

On Nov. 21, the dog checked vehicles in the parking lot of Motel 6, 1130 N. Third St., near the entrance to the Kansas Turnpike, sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Kari Wempe said. It didn’t detect any drugs.

In an unrelated case, the dog helped detect marijuana Wednesday evening during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 40, leading to the arrest of a 26-year-old Shawnee man on suspicion of drug dealing. He was released on bond.

The dog also has been used recently in the following cases in which no drugs were found:

¢ A Nov. 17 check of lockers and vehicles at Ottawa High School, initiated at the request of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

¢ A traffic stop Nov. 19 at 11th and Cherry streets in Eudora, requested by Eudora police.

¢ A Nov. 20 traffic stop by the sheriff’s office on Interstate 70 west of Lawrence.
