Hutchinson stops SM West in 6A finals

Emporia ? Romero Cotton rushed for 133 yards in the second half, including an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, to lead Hutchinson over Shawnee Mission West, 21-14, in the Class 6A state championship on Saturday.
The victory was the 23rd straight dating back to last season for the Salt Hawks (13-0), who also won their third consecutive state title.
Trailing 7-0 late in the first half, Shawnee Mission West (12-1) tied it when Ryan Wingers blocked a punt by Hutchinson’s Brett Mallon, scooped up the loose ball and returned it 10 yards for the score.
Cotton, held to four yards rushing in the first half, took the opening handoff of the third quarter and outran the Vikings’ David Leonard for an 80-yard touchdown that put Hutchinson back on top 14-7.
Shawnee Mission West tied it on the Vikings’ next possession with a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Blake Lawrence.
But the Salt Hawks regained the lead for good five plays later when Wes Kimmel hit Brent Cooprider in the back of the end zone with a five-yard touchdown pass.
The Vikings threatened to tie it again with less than two minutes remaining when Kurt Webster took a long pass from Lawrence, only to have the ball knocked from his hands at the five-yard line and recovered by Hutchinson’s Nate Dreiling.

Blue Valley 34, Great Bend 3
Topeka – Zach Rampy compiled 252 total yards, running for two touchdowns and throwing for a third, as he led Blue Valley to the Class 5A state championship .
The Tigers used well-balanced offense to control the tempo of the game. Rampy, Kyle Hoge and Anthony DiGiovanni combined for more than 170 rushing yards.
Blue Valley used the ground game to set up big pass plays.
Andale 35, Paola 7
Hutchinson – Jason Robben ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns to lead Andale in the Class 4A championship game.
The win capped an undefeated season and gave Andale (14-0) its first state football title. Robben scored on three of Andale’s first five possessions as the Indians never trailed.
Andale scored on the game’s first possession, driving 73 yards in 13 plays to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Robben capped the drive by scoring from 8 yards out on a fourth-and-1 play.
Robben finished the season with 2,099 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Dillard ran for 124 yards on 25 carries to lead Paola, which was seeking its first title since 1994.
Silver Lake 49, Garden Plain 21
Salina – Tyler Roberts threw for 223 yards and four touchdowns to lead Silver Lake to in the Kansas Class 3A state football championship game Saturday.
The victory ended a string of four consecutive runner-up finishes for Silver Lake (14-0). It also gave the Eagles their first state title since 1997 and the sixth in the program’s history.
The loss denied Garden Plain (12-2) its first-ever state football title. The Owls also reached the state title game in 2003 but lost to Pittsburg Colgan.
Smith Center 56, St. Mary’s 26
Hays – Quarterback Joe Windscheffel carried the ball seven times for 192 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead Smith Center to the Kansas Class 2-1A state championship.
Smith Center’s 2-1A crown is its third consecutive state title in 2-1A and the school’s sixth overall as it defeated the same team the Redmen played in 1999, a 31-9 win for Smith Center in the 3A title game.
The win pushes Smith Center’s win streak to 41 games since dropping to 2-1A, Kansas’ longest prep winning streak.
