Museum teaches kids the tao of Turkey Day

Lawrence kids got a glimpse at the history of Thanksgiving on Saturday.

The Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass., hosted a program to pique kids’ interest in history, said Kerry Lippincott, museum curator.

“I want lellow,” said 5-year-old Ethan Anderson, as he pointed to the colorful muffin cups the children used to make a craft.

“We just always like coming to the Watkins kids’ activities,” said his mother, Shari Anderson. “They’re always fun.”

The museum has offered the program since January. Lippincott picks a different topic each month.

She said she enjoys making history fun for kids, so they’ll be “lovers of history for life.”

Susan Shea attended with Mya Vann as a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor program.

“Sometimes I think you forget about Thanksgiving and head straight to Christmas, so it’s nice for the kids to actually do something about Thanksgiving,” Shea said.

Lippincott read the children two books, including “Thank You Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving,” which explains how a woman named Sarah Hale appealed to President Abraham Lincoln for Thanksgiving to become a national holiday after 38 years of trying to get her message heard.

“Nothing stopped Sarah,” Lippincott read.

After story time, Lippincott enthusiastically helped the rowdy bunch of youngsters make turkeys and ships to take home.

“Now, I’m going to take a nap!” said Lippincott, after all the kids left.
