Tributes rule TV today

Reba McEntire has emerged as one of the most popular singers in country music. Like Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash and others before her, McEntire has transcended one musical genre to become a pop star with crossover appeal. She has sung and starred in Broadway musicals and created her own eponymous network sitcom. “Giants: Reba” (7 p.m., CMT) salutes McEntire with a two-and-a-half-hour special taped last month before a live audience. Singers including Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson lead the musical tribute.

¢ Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams host “Comic Relief 2006” (8 p.m. today, TBS and HBO), a live, three-hour standup-comedy concert to raise funds for survivors of Hurricane Katrina. Participating comics and performers include Louie Anderson, Tom Arnold, Wayne Brady, Cheryl Hines, Emeril Lagasse and Aisha Tyler.

In other comedy news, “The Amazing Johnathan: Wrong on Every Level” (9 p.m. today, Comedy Central) showcases a comic magician whose ability to pick cards and pull rabbits out of hats leaves much to the imagination.

¢ Christmas arrives early on “Unwrapping Macy’s” (9 p.m. today, WE) with a documentary glance at the creation of the department store’s SantaLand, involving fierce competition at an audition of more than 100 would-be elves.

¢ The new cartoon series “Skyland” (8 p.m. today, Nicktoons) debuts with an hourlong pilot. Set in the year 2251, after the Earth has been shattered into a million floating pieces, “Skyland’s” teenage heroes and heroines fight against an evil ruler named The Sphere. Combining animation techniques old and new, “Skyland” will air every Saturday night at 8 p.m.
