Youth sports meeting planned

A public meeting to gather information about city youth athletic facilities will be next Monday.

Partners for Lawrence Athletics and Youth (PLAY) will sponsor the session at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Arts Center, 840 N.H. St.

The open meeting will be conducted by personnel from Treanor Architects, a city firm awarded the contract to complete a needs assessment and feasibility study.

The PLAY initiative is being spearheaded by Bonnie Lowe, former mayor and city commissioner, who sought financial support for a feasibility study to explore long-range planning and evaluation of future sports complex development.

In May, the 18-member PLAY committee was formed with members from the City of Lawrence, USD 497, Douglas County and the Chamber of Commerce.

The objectives are to evaluate the present state of the city’s athletic facilities and to investigate the need and support for sports and recreation complexes.
