Insurance firm acquires K.C. agency

Lawrence's Charlton Manley adds employees, clients with purchase of Wrenn Insurance

A Lawrence-based insurance agency is expanding its reach in the Kansas City metro area, acquiring the personal and commercial insurance operations of an independent office in Mission.

Charlton Manley Insurance on Monday announced its acquisition of Wrenn Insurance Inc.’s traditional insurance business. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal adds $7 million to $8 million of annual premiums to the $85 million collected by Charlton Manley last year, as the Lawrence-based agency continues to search for ways to extend its business beyond its traditional power centers.

The company has offices in Lawrence, Topeka and Overland Park, where it focuses on serving individuals and mid-sized commercial customers.

“We could always add customers in all our locations, but Lawrence is by far our most heavily penetrated market, and Topeka would be second,” said Gary Sollars, Charlton Manley chief executive officer. “The place we have lots of room for growth is the greater Kansas City area, so that’s why this is such a good fit for us – by adding more customers and territory, we can certainly add to our market share.”

Four Wrenn employees have been hired to work in Charlton Manley’s office in Overland Park, while the main agent behind the Mission operation – Mike Wrenn – has joined Charlton Manley as an independent producer, and will continue to work with his commercial clients.

The deal with Wrenn Insurance gives Charlton Manley another 250 commercial clients and about 750 personal clients.

“They’ve already been receiving excellent service,” Sollars said. “Now they’ll be getting tremendous service.”

As part of the deal, Mike Wrenn retains ownership of Renovators Insurance Inc., a specialty program that will continue to be run out of his Mission office.

Charlton Manley, founded in 1861, now has about 70 employees in three offices.

The company’s annual revenue growth has been about 8 percent a year since 2000, Sollars said.
