Help pours in for Topeka congregation

? The congregation of St. David’s Episcopal Church has vowed to rebuild the burned-out church, helped by donations and gifts from other parishes in Topeka and beyond.

On Sunday, two days after an arson fire caused up to $3 million damage at St. David’s, parishioners gathered across the street at Faith Lutheran Church for their weekly service.

Faith Lutheran had offered its church just hours after Friday’s fire, one of many acts of kindness St. David’s has received.

“When you’ve encountered God’s presence in a certain place, you feel the pain when that place is destroyed. I would certainly feel that,” said the Rev. Peter Tremain, pastor of Faith Lutheran.

The Rev. Don Davidson, rector at St. David’s, told more than 300 people at the service Sunday that the church would rebound. “We don’t need a building, we need our hands,” he said. “We will not let anyone with matches put us down. We will build, and they will come.”

The Rev. Dale Plummer collected an offering Sunday morning from his congregation at Episcopal Church of the Covenant in Junction City, then drove an hour to give it to St. David’s.

And the Rev. Steve Lipscomb, of Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka, brought a donation and offered the keys to his church to St. David’s. At least two $5,000 checks were offered to Davidson on Sunday to help in rebuilding.

Tonya Smith, who renewed her vows with her husband at the church, said she was thrilled by the support the church received.

“People I run into at the store are telling me if I need anything, to call,” she said.
