Old Home Town – 40 years ago

W. Keith Kelley, former Haskell Institute superintendent, was named to receive the U.S. Interior Department’s highest honor for his work in Native American programs. Kelley had retired in 1964 after 40 years in the field of education.

Douglas County shattered its off-year voter turnout in the 1966 election by more than 4,400 votes. In the contests commanding the most attention, local citizens gave victory majorities to Democratic governor candidate Robert Docking, a $3.8 million school bond issue and to Republican state legislature candidates John Vogel and Morris Kay. The final voter turnout for the county was 13,709 out of approximately 18,350 registered voters. That surpassed by 4,411 the former non-presidential election year record of 9,198 in 1962.

Lawrence’s Fourth Precinct, First Ward, had a 98 percent voter turnout at the National Guard Armory. There were 138 eligible voters and 135 cast ballots.
