Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 8, 1906: “George J. Barker, ex-speaker of the Kansas House, has proposed, through the World, a set of laws to give our prohibitory legislation more teeth and to make enforcement easier. He says his goal is to improve the morality of the state by dealing harsher with liquor. : The Kansas Masons held a grand rally here to celebrate their semi-centennial. It was an impressive event. : The battleship Louisiana left today with President Roosevelt its main passenger, headed for the Panama Canal zone. Roosevelt said he is going down there ‘to see how the ditch is coming along.’ : The local voter proposition to provide a new jail passed by more than 1,000 votes and work needs to begin soon to replace the current terrible facility. Generally, local voters supported just about every winner in the various races.”
