Democratic Rep. Tom Holland far outpaced his Republican opponent in Douglas County to win a third term representing the 10th Kansas House District.

He was unsuccessfully challenged by Franklin County commissioner Roy Dunn, a Republican.

The district includes 16 precincts in southern Douglas and Franklin counties. Holland, a Baldwin resident, received 4,320 votes, or just more than 61 percent of those cast. Dunn got 36 percent, or 2,524 votes. Libertarian Robert Garrard got 192 votes.

Franklin County’s six precincts awarded Dunn, an Ottawa Republican, 47 percent to Holland’s 49 percent of their votes. But Douglas County’s 10 precincts overwhelmingly voted for Holland, 67 percent to Dunn’s 30 percent.

Dunn said he needed a lot more votes from Franklin County to counterbalance voter turnout in Holland’s home county.

“Well, I think we could have done better if I’d had Franklin County support,” said Dunn, who partially attributed low support to dissatisfaction with Republicans in Washington, D.C.

Holland, who could not be reached for comment, will once again represent southern Lawrence, all of Baldwin, Wellsville, northern Ottawa and surrounding rural areas.
