Boyda defeats incumbent Ryun for 2nd Congressional seat

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Democrat Nancy Boyda defeated five-term Republican Rep. Jim Ryun in the 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday, a stunning reversal of their race two years ago.

With 74 percent of the precincts reporting, Boyda had 51 percent of the vote to Ryun’s 47 percent. Reform Party candidate Roger Tucker pulled the remaining 2 percent.

“I feel very, very honored,” Boyda said in claiming victory. “We may be at a time in history when people are ready to work.”

Ryun’s loss was part of a national trend in which Democrats were close to recapturing a majority in the House.

The state’s three other congressional incumbents, in contrast, won their re-election bids by wide margins, including Democrat Dennis Moore, who was leading Republican Chuck Ahner in the 3rd District.

The call for Boyda in Kansas was based on a number of factors, including voter turnout, previous voting patterns, and a statistical analysis of the vote from voter interviews conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
