Boyda defeats incumbent Ryun for 2nd Congressional seat

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Democrat Nancy Boyda defeated five-term Republican Rep. Jim Ryun in the 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday, a stunning reversal of their race two years ago.
With 74 percent of the precincts reporting, Boyda had 51 percent of the vote to Ryun's 47 percent. Reform Party candidate Roger Tucker pulled the remaining 2 percent.
"I feel very, very honored," Boyda said in claiming victory. "We may be at a time in history when people are ready to work."
Ryun's loss was part of a national trend in which Democrats were close to recapturing a majority in the House.
The state's three other congressional incumbents, in contrast, won their re-election bids by wide margins, including Democrat Dennis Moore, who was leading Republican Chuck Ahner in the 3rd District.
The call for Boyda in Kansas was based on a number of factors, including voter turnout, previous voting patterns, and a statistical analysis of the vote from voter interviews conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Boyda may in fact turn out to be the winner of this thing… but I think this was called *WAY* too early.
And the fact that Boyda gave what was essentially a “victory speech” before Ryun officially conceded… well, that was kinda low-class.
I certainly hope that was the low point of her next four years in Congress. I have high hopes for Nancy Boyda—that's why I voted for her.

Boyda is the lesser of two evils here. She spoke at my high school (Seabury) two years ago when she ran, and I was unimpressed.

Problem is that Ryun never showed up to defend his seat. If you just moved here…other than Boyda mentioning his name in her commercials…you would have had no idea who the incumbent was…

I didn't see her speech, but she did lose to him last time, and her campaign was telling everybody that she had a chance and was really close and it seems like nobody believed her until the last few weeks. I'd be a little eager to declare victory if I was in her place.

I'm sure there is a high school track team in western Kansas that needs a coach, someone give them Jim Ryan's number. Hopefully he can find employment that is he qualified for.

Mkh: very funny! However, I think it's much more likely he'll be going back to DC as a lobbyist. Fortunately, he'll have a large number of former Republican Congressmen to keep him company!

Who'd a thunk it? Kansas, going Democratic, in our lifetimes!
Wonder what Fox News, Rush Limburger, Bill O'Reilly et.al is telling our local conservative troglodyte contingent to think and say before they begin posting.
Looks like Howard Dean knew what he was doing all along.
