Raiders to attempt Super Bowl sweep

? Followers of the Oakland Raiders have been sent to the record books often this season to quantify how bad the team has been.

Worst start to a season since 1964, longest losing streak since 1962, second-worst offensive performance since 1970, worst shutout loss at home ever.

That’s the kind of season it’s been so far in Oakland.

After an 0-5 start sparked talk of a winless season, the Raiders (2-5) have shown some signs of life by winning two straight games. And now they have a chance to make some positive history if they can follow up last week’s win against defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh with a win against last season’s runner-up, Seattle (4-3).

“It would be big. You had everybody laughing at us the previous five weeks before these past two wins,” defensive back Chris Carr said. “If we can beat these two teams, that would show something and be a big confidence boost.”

The Raiders, in fact, would be the first team to pull off the Super Bowl sweep in consecutive weeks since the Detroit Lions in 1985, beating San Francisco 23-21 on Oct. 20 and Miami 31-21 the following week.

Granted, getting the chance to play both Super Bowl teams in consecutive weeks isn’t a common occurrence. In fact, it hasn’t happened at all since the Chicago Bears had the chance in 2002, and only 11 teams have had the chance since 1983.

In those 22 meetings, the Super Bowl teams won 18 of the games, with the only teams other than the Lions to win being Buffalo over Dallas in 1996, and Pittsburgh over Denver in 1990.

“It would be an exciting feat for us,” linebacker Kirk Morrison said. “We feel like we’re still gaining momentum. It would erase some of what happened the first five games. What would be a better building block for us than beating a team that got to a Super Bowl?”

But in reality, the back-to-back victories would do little more than give a boost to the Raiders’ pride. The Lions went just 7-9 the year they did it, and Oakland would be lucky to match that after the way it started the season.
