Barbie getting a new beau: M-A-C

Here’s a seemingly odd match: Barbie, the Mattel Inc.-produced doll called “the timeless symbol of fashion, beauty and femininity for girls,” is pairing up with M-A-C cosmetics – the self-described “attitudinally hip and artfully irreverent” makeup line. The two last week announced an “unprecedented global partnership” targeted at adults that would be unveiled this spring.

Barbie is the centerpiece of toys made by Mattel, which calls her “the most popular fashion doll ever introduced.”

The partnership likely will focus on linking the iconic doll in the toy boxes of young girls everywhere with M-A-C’s adult cosmetics, which encompasses lipstick with names like Chance Encounter and Night Affair as well as an eye shadow called Smut.

Barbie has extended its brand into cosmetics in the past, but those efforts were targeted at young girls.
