Baldwin photographer Edward C. Robison III was selected by the Lawrence Arts Commission to create this year’s Phoenix Awards.

Robison printed nine panoramic landscape photos – about 10 inches by 37 inches – on stretched canvas and then framed them in museum-style black frames.

The ninth print will be on display at the Lawrence Arts Center, where there will be a ceremony for the winners at 2 p.m. today. Robison received a $1,700 honorarium from the Lawrence Arts Commission to create the awards.

Robison was born and raised in Warrensburg, Mo. While attending high school, he focused on drawing and painting, but he shifted his focus to photography in college and transferred from Kansas University to the Kansas City Art Institute.

There, he discovered the work of Southwestern landscape photographer Michael Fatali, whose work inspired him to spend a summer as Fatali’s apprentice. That’s when he found that his true passion was photographing the landscape, specifically Midwestern scenes.
