From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 2, 1906: “W.R. Stubbs has begun work on a residence on south Massachusetts Street which when completed will have the distinction of being the most substantial and unique home in the state. (Later the Lawrence Woman’s Club.) It will be four stories high and there is talk the fourth level will have a ballroom. : One of the hottest election campaigns in years will end next Tuesday and Douglas County voters will also decide on jail bonds. Locally, the Democrats do not have much of a chance.”
