Kansas City, Mo. ? As they went about Tuesday preparing for next week’s amateur draft, staff members of the Kansas City Royals were waiting nervously to find out whether Dayton Moore would be their next boss.

It’s been almost a month since Royals owner David Glass said he was fed up with losing and would make “significant changes.” Glass also said he was not contemplating a change in field managers, so everyone has assumed that Allard Baird, the general manager for the past six years, was on his way out.

However, Baird has continued to go about his usual duties while everybody waits for Glass to make an announcement.

Moore, 39, has been a top assistant under Braves general manager John Schuerholz and was first reported last week to be Glass’ choice to replace the embattled Baird.

“I think it’s just a matter of whether Dayton Moore will take the job or not,” a high-ranking team source close to the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the matter, said Moore was well-respected throughout baseball.

“He’s a bright kid who would probably do a good job for this organization,” he said. “If something is going to happen, I hope it happens soon. The waiting around is making everybody pretty nervous.”

Neither Glass nor Moore could be reached for comment. Schuerholz, reached at his office in Atlanta, declined to comment on Moore or the Royals’ situation.
