KU sends 10 to NCAAs

Ten members of this year’s Kansas University track and field teams are heading to the 2006 NCAA Championships next month in Sacramento, Calif.

Six Jayhawks earned spots in the meet by recording top-five finishes at the Midwest Regional Championships. They are Charisse Bacchus in the women’s long jump, Paul Hefferon in the men’s 5,000 meters, Sheldon Battle in the men’s shot put, Cody Roberts in the men’s discus, Egor Agafonov in the men’s hammer throw and Zlata Tarasova in the women’s hammer throw.

Four additional KU athletes were awarded at-large berths. They are Abby Emsick in the women’s discus, Denita Young in the women’s javelin, Cameron Schwehr in the men’s 1,500 meters, and Josh Kirk, who advanced due to a provisional qualifying score in the men’s decathlon.

This year’s NCAA event will be held at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on June 7-10.
