Thunderstorms rumbling in this morning

Hot, steamy Memorial Day ahead

Storms were rolling east across Kansas this morning and were rumbling toward Douglas County, possibly bringing heavy rain and hail, according to the National Weather Service.

At 10:14 a.m., the weather service said that storms were moving northeast across Osage, Shawnee and southern Jackson counties and were heading into Jefferson and Douglas counties.

Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist, is predicting temperatures heading up to 90 degrees today. The average high temperature for this date is 80 degrees. The record high was 97 degrees, set in 1934. Winds today will be from the south at 8 to 15 mph, she said.

Most of the storms will be to the south of Lawrence, Schack said. The National Weather Service says the chance for showers and thunderstorms is 20 percent this afternoon and 50 percent tonight.

At 10:30 a.m., skies were partly cloudy at Lawrence Municipal Airport and the temperature was 82 degrees. The humidity was 65 percent and winds were out of the south at 18 mph, gusting to 24 mph.

The low this morning at the airport was 73 degrees. The average low temperature for this date is 60 degrees. The record low was 35 degrees, set in 1947.

Scattered storms will move in this afternoon and overnight, Schack said. If any strong storms develop, the main threat would be hail and strong winds, she said.

Tuesday’s morning low will be 71 degrees, with storms possible during the day, Schack said. The high will reach 82 degrees, she said.

Storms are also possible Wednesday morning, Schack said. Wednesday’s morning low will be 66 degrees, with Wednesday’s high climbing to 84 degrees, she said.
