Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 29, 1906: “Charles Achning’s hardware store at 822 Mass. was entered by burglars early today and a large number of rifles, shots guns, cutlery, shells and pistols were secured. The losses are estimated at about $2,000 and the thieves knew full well what they were doing, having obviously seen what was in the store and where best to get it. No arrests have been made but there appear to be several leads about a gang working this region, a gang familiar with what is at hand. : A circus has secured a license to perform Decoration Day in Topeka but old soldiers are upset about what they call Decoration Day Desecration. : Eudora got a valuable addition this week. Henry Hagenbuch has erected an ice manufacturing plant to meet needs which nature has failed to provide with sufficient freezes the past winter. : The United States has sent Marines to Panama to prevent election riots.”
