KU track sends four to NCAAs

Agafonov wins regional hammer

? Kansas University sophomores Egor Agafonov and Paul Hefferon, senior Charisse Bacchus and junior Cody Roberts earned top five finishes Friday at the NCAA Midwest regionals and have qualified for the NCAA track and field championships.

Agafonov, who won the Big 12 hammer crown two weeks ago, added a regional title Friday with a toss of 226-4, eight feet past the closest competitor. The Togliatti, Russia, native owns the Kansas hammer record and will head to Sacramento, Calif. (June 7-10) with the second-longest throw in the country.

Bacchus placed third in the long jump in 21-41â4. She holds the country’s second-longest jump this season.

Roberts placed fifth in the discus in 186-3 – short of his personal best (188-11) set at the Big 12 meet. Hefferon and Colby Wissel placed fifth and seventh in the 5,000. Hefferon’s time was 14:24.41 to give him the automatic qualification while Wissel ran a 14:33.58.

Several Jayhawks also qualified for the finals in their events to be held today. The 400 relay team of Crystal Manning, Tiffany Cherry, Victoria Howard and Charisse Bacchus improved on its previous best time of 45.59, running a time of 44.99, good for sixth.

Sophomore Ashley Brown had the fourth best mark in the 400 hurdles in a personal best 59.36. Junior Janiece Gatson finished 12th in 1:01.5. Senior Cameron Schwehr placed 12th in the 1,500 prelims in 3:53.1.

Freshman Stephanie Horton notched ninth in the shot put in 48-41â2.

Senior Denita Young finished 10th in the javelin in 155-6.

Senior Angela Pichardo placed fifth in the 800 prelims in 2:15.94.

Soph Julius Jiles was 16h in the 400-meter hurdles (54.21) while senior Aaron Thompson placed 18th (55.60).
