Manhattan ? Critics of Bob Huggins who say the Kansas State basketball coach coddles unruly players might get an argument now.

Cartier Martin, the Wildcats’ best returning scorer, was suspended from the team indefinitely Friday for unspecified conduct violations. Mario Taybron, a reserve guard, was dismissed from the team for violating the policy on substance abuse, athletic director Tim Weiser announced.

No other information was given. A team spokesman said neither Weiser nor Huggins would have further comment.

“They are both traveling right now,” said basketball sports information director Tom Gilbert. “And if you did reach them, they would not have anything to say.”

Martin and Taybron were also out of town, Gilbert said, and would not return until the start of summer school the second week in June.

Martin, presumably, could be reinstated by the time Huggins begins practice with his first Kansas State team in November.

If not, his loss could be significant.

Last year as a junior, the 6-foot-7 Houston native averaged 18 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds as the Wildcats went 15-13 overall and 6-10 in the conference. He was named second-team All-Big 12 by The Associated Press. He has started 55 straight games.

Taybron would have been a senior in the upcoming season. He transferred to Kansas State from Eastern Oklahoma State.

Huggins’ 2006-07 team is starting to look vividly different from last year’s Wildcat squad.
