Emily Erb, a senior at Free State High School, has received a Deans’ Award scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art & Design.

The merit scholarship was given as a result of an art portfolio competition at the college in Columbus, Ohio. Erb will begin her studies this fall and plans to major in interior design. She is the daughter of Karen and Tom Erb, Lawrence, and is the student of Carolyn Berry.

¢ The Old West Lawrence Applause Committee has chosen four properties to acknowledge for April/May 2006:

¢ At 639 Tenn., Stephen Birchfield has brought out the details of his home with a colorful new paint job.

¢ James and Margaret Thorp, new owners of 646 La., have updated their historic stone house with a new neighbor-friendly fence and perennial plantings.

¢ Ian Hurst and Hannah Rockhill have beautifully rehabilitated their 19th century stone cottage and addition at 736 Ala. Incidentally, just to the north there was once an identical cottage where Langston Hughes lived with his grandmother.

¢ At 736 Mo., Raina Vissman has turned her front yard into an oasis of lush green lawn surrounded by colorful shrubs.

Signs will be in place to honor the neighbors for their efforts to make Old West Lawrence a more attractive place.

¢ Beloit College junior Jared Nance, Lawrence, recently received the Walter S. Haven Physics/Astronomy Prize and the R.R. Palmer Fellowship in Teaching Award at the college’s Honors Day Convocation. The Haven Prize is given to students in biology, chemistry, geology and physics/astronomy who complete outstanding research projects. The college is in Beloit, Wis.

¢ Quail Run School earned a 13th place trophy in the K-6 Championship Division at the National Elementary Chess Championships May 12-14 in Denver. Members of the team were Garrick Clapp, Andrei Elliott, Luke Lesslie, Cole Reams, Alan Shi and Aaron Simon.

Individually, Alan Shi claimed the 16th place trophy and Garrick Clapp garnered a second place trophy for unrated players.

Other Lawrence players competing at nationals were: Finnian Dobbs, Jonathan Lesslie, and Ting-Ting Shi, Quail Run; Roscoe Bradt, Jakob Burdett, McCarthy Fitch, Sam Stephens, George Wedge and Eddie Wilson, Cordley School; and Owen McFadden, Wakarusa Valley School.

¢ The Eudora High School Alumni Assn.’s banquet and yearly meeting will be June 4 in the Eudora High School commons area, 2203 Church St.

Registration begins at noon. The covered-dish dinner will start at 12:30 p.m., followed by the business meeting.

The banquet is open to all graduates of Eudora High School. Special recognition will be given to the class of 1956.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own table service. Coffee and tea will be provided.

¢ Brenda Hughes, Wellsville, and Brandy Jones, Perry, each received a $1,200 scholarship for their senior year through the Shepherd Scholars program at Emporia State University. Hughes is an accounting major and Jones is studying health and physical education.

¢ Audrey Deeken, a senior at McLouth High School, has received the Dale Dennis Excellence in Education award sponsored by United School Administrators and Jostens of Kansas. Audrey is the daughter of Rodney and Susan Deeken, McLouth.

¢ Kelli Criswell graduated magna cum laude from Truman State University on May 13 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, marketing concentration, and an economics minor.

She was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the highest honor for students of business and management, on April 29. Kelli is the daughter of Bob and Jan Criswell and a 2002 graduate of Free State High School.

¢ Molly Krishtalka, Lawrence, was selected to attend the 23rd annual Governor’s Scholars Award program in Topeka. The recognition ceremony honors the top academic 1 percent of Kansas high school seniors. Scholars are selected from accredited public and private schools in the state.

¢ Washburn University announces area students who were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society during the past school year. They are Jesse Tanksley, De Soto; Jennifer Moffitt, Callie Pippin and Ann Boncella, Lawrence; and Deanna Stover, Perry. Those elected to membership include juniors in the top 7.5 percent of their class and seniors in the top 10 percent of their class.

¢ Sarah Elizabeth Charnes graduated from Truman State University on May 13 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. She will begin a full-time position as economist in the Office of Economic Policy and Analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C., in July. She is the daughter of Suzanne and John Charnes, Lawrence.

¢ Nate Johnson, a 1998 graduate of Lawrence High School, graduated from the Kansas University School of Medicine on Sunday.

Johnson will begin a residency program in diagnostic radiology at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., and will continue at the University of Rochester, New York. He is the son of Gary and Maribel Johnson, Lawrence.
