Old home town – 100 years ago today
From the Lawrence Daily World for May 23, 1906: “The preliminary hearing for James Wright for the murder of Buddy Porter in Baldwin three weeks ago was held today. Wright is bound over on a $2,000 bond for probable trial in a killing that occurred after a craps game argument. : Henrik Ibsen, the world-famous Norwegian poet, has died at the age of 78. He was also a well-known dramatist and the loss in a big one. : Zephyr flour is doing well here and by buying locally, we can keep many dollars from leaving here for purchase of flour from sources other than our local one. Let’s keep our money at home. : The Kansas Episcopal Diocese has completed a successful state gathering here and many say they would like to hold the annual meeting here all the time. : Lawrence and Topeka have voted against allowing a circus to perform on Decoration Day May 31 but will allow the shows the next day. They say there should be reverence for the dead.”
