Orientation available for witnesses, victims

Douglas County Dist. Atty. Charles Branson made good on an election-season promise Friday by offering the first in a series of orientation programs for victims and witnesses.

Just a handful of people attended Friday’s noon-hour program in the basement of the Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St., but Branson said he hoped more would attend in weeks ahead as the word gets out.

The program will be offered at noon the first and third Friday of each month. It includes a presentation about what witnesses should expect when they come to court to testify.

Branson’s office has been sending fliers to witnesses telling them they can attend the meetings if they are “confused and/or anxious” about what to expect if they participate in a criminal case.

Branson pledged to start the program as part of his 2004 campaign platform.
