Vespas hold Red team scoreless, win 3-0

It was good to be a Vespa on Saturday afternoon at Youth Sports Inc. and it was also good that Siena Vance dons a Vespa jersey. After scoring three goals and holding the Red team scoreless, the Vespas recorded the 3-0 victory in the girls U10 match-up with the Red team.

The 3-0 victory came on the legs of Vance, who pulled a hat trick to give the team their winning score.

Vance said the game was the second to the last for the Vespas, but was the most rewarding because it gave them a taste of victory they haven’t had for a while.

“This game felt great because we lost most of the games we’ve played,” Vance said. “We are glad we won this one.”

The scales weren’t always tipped in the favor of the Vespas though. Throughout the beginning of the first half, it looked as if the game would turn out to be an even match-up. The Red team aggressively fought for the ball while spreading out their offensive line to challenge the Vespas’ defensive players.

Both teams seemed as if they would not budge, until Vance shot in the first of her three goals and aroused cheers from the parent-filled crowd. Holding the crowd’s attention, Vance came through minutes later with another goal to give the Vespas a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.

The Vespas continued their domination in the second half with a solid defensive front. Red team forwards could barely make it past the Vespas’ impenetrable defense. Vespas goalie Brynna Davis said her job was a lot easier thanks to the skills of her defensive teammates.

“The goalies barely got the ball because of our good defense,” Davis said. “This was the best game because we really fought for the ball on this one.”

The Vespas’ success didn’t stop there though. Later in the second half, the Vespas were allowed a penalty kick and elected Vance to shoot it. Vance hit the back of the net to round out her goal trifecta. Vance’s third and final goal sealed the Vespas 3-0 victory.

Both teams will play one more game before the Recreation league soccer season ends. Vance said she is excited for the Vespas’ last game after experiencing the outcome of this one.

“We have one more game so we’ll see how it goes, but I think we did pretty good today,” Vance said.
