Topeka ? Miami and Shawnee counties each will get a new district judge to help their district courts handle heavy caseloads, thanks to a provision in the next state budget.

The state Supreme Court on Monday started the process of filling the two new positions. Local nominating commissions in each county will have a month to screen applications and forward the names of three finalists to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
