Report: Ex-president’s son charged in murder

? Prosecutors have charged the son of Mozambique’s former president with masterminding the assassination of the country’s top investigative journalist, according to a report Saturday.

Nyimpine Chissano was likely to be arrested soon, according to the newspaper Mediafax. He is the son of Joachim Chissano, who stepped down as president in 2004.

The charge sheet accuses Chissano of ordering the 2000 killing of Carlos Cardoso and funding the assassins, the report said. Cardoso was killed while investigating a huge banking scandal.

The paper said information provided by Annibal dos Santos Jr., or Anibalzinho, who was sentenced in January to 30 years in prison for leading the hit squad, incriminated Chissano in the murder.

Anibalzinho insisted at his trial that Chissano had nothing to do with the murder, despite long-standing rumors that he was behind it. He said the ringleaders were the former bank manager Vicente Ramaya and brothers Nini and Ayob Abdul Satar. All three are already imprisoned.
