KU’s Agafonov sets league hammer mark

? Kansas University sophomore Egor Agafonov claimed the second Big 12 Conference title of his career when he shattered the league record in the hammer throw on Friday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

Agafonov won Friday with a throw of 225-feet, 2-inches. The old record was 221-1, by Texas’ Dylan Armstrong.

Agafonov, a native of Togliatti, Russia, won the weight throw at the Big 12 Indoor in February.

“I am very glad to have won,” Agafonov said. “I really liked throwing here a lot. It was a little slippery, but that was fine. I would also like to thank my coach, my team and the University of Kansas.”

KU’s Sheldon Battle finished seventh in the hammer at 188-11.

Kansas freshman Zlata Tarasova placed second in the women’s hammer at 192-5.

KU’s Josh Kirk is in fifth of 13 athletes after the first day of the decathlon. Kirk has 3,700 points.

Also, Jayhawk junior Tyler Kelly was ninth in the 10,000 in 31:17.4.

The Kansas men are third in the team standings with 12 points, while the KU women are fifth with eight points.

The meet continues today.
