Giants throw party for 75-year-old Mays

? Willie Mays celebrated his 75th birthday six days late in a ballpark bash featuring six other Hall of Fame players and, of course, godson Barry Bonds.

Fans gave the Giants Hall of Famer a standing ovation and chanted “Willie! Willie!” during the on-field ceremony Friday night in which Bonds escorted Mays from the dugout to the mound area. Mays, who tipped his cap several times to the cheering fans, turned 75 on May 6.

“This feeling I have in my heart tonight is so wonderful,” Mays said, with fans on their feet.

The crowd sang “Happy Birthday” as balloons in all colors were released into the air before the first pitch of the opener of San Francisco’s three-game weekend series against the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Moments later, the chants of “Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.!” began.

They presented Mays with a giant orange 75 cake, which Mays chopped with his hand in order to have a piece. He then made his exit in a shiny 1966 orange Mustang, throwing baseballs into the crowd and even one into the Dodgers’ dugout to draw boos.

Mays, elected into the Hall of Fame in 1979, played 21 of his 22 seasons in the Giants’ organization beginning in 1951 with the New York Giants. Mays batted .302 for his career with 660 homers – fourth place on the career list – in 10,881 at-bats and 2,992 games.

Other Hall of Famers included Orlando Cepeda, Gaylord Perry, Willie McCovey, Eddie Murray, Tom Seaver, Reggie Jackson, and broadcasters Lon Simmons and Vin Scully.

And in the ballpark were 10 former Rookies of the Year; five members of the 500 home run club; seven with 335 or more homers; four pitchers with seven total Cy Young awards; and six players with 13 total MVP awards – a record seven of those won by Bonds. What’s more, there were five no-

hitters among the group with Perry, Seaver, Fernando Valenzuela, Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti and Dodgers right-hander Derek Lowe.
