FCE and 4-H news

The Vinland Family and Community Education unit will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Marian Bradley. Paula Johnson will present the program “Exploring Kansas.”

The Vinland Valley 4-H Club met May 1 at the Vinland Methodist Church. Bailey Brown, vice president, called the meeting to order. Members answered roll call by giving a safety rule about one of their projects.

Parris Nottingham gave a treasurer’s report. Amanda Miller, historian, wants pictures for the club scrapbook. Lacey Hunsinger and Amy Stone gave a council report.

Sandy Stone gave a leader’s report. She reminded members of the June 30 deadline for Douglas County Free Fair entry forms. Dalton Vesecky and Casey George talked about the club tour.

Members were asked to attend the Bromelsick Memorial ceremony on May 27.

Members enrolled in the goat and sheep projects presented the program. They were Melissa Emory, Misty Emory, Jenny Tuley, Hannah Tuley, Mariah Schwager, Parris Nottingham and Connor Nottingham.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 5 at the church. The program will be given by members enrolled in the horse, dairy and beef projects. Hosts will be the George and Wilson families.

Jayhawk 4-H Club members worked at concession stands for the swap meet last weekend in Lawrence. The club uses the money for community service projects, scholarships and 4-H activities.

The club has collected 47 nonperishable food items as part of a statewide 4-H food drive. The food is donated to the Leo Center in Lawrence.

The club’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. June 12. The club will have a cookout with the leftover hot dogs from the swap meet concession stands. Members are to bring a side dish.
