¢ The Lawrence African Violet Club’s annual Spring Violet and Plant Sale is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Malls Shopping Center, 23rd and Louisiana streets.

¢The Kaw Valley Quilters Guild of Lawrence will have its 29th annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper Ave. Admission is $3.

The featured quilter will be Terry Thompson, who is a popular Kansas quilt artist and has authored quilting books, designed fabrics and quilting tools, and collected vintage quilts and textiles. Thompson will be talking about the virtues of red-and-green quilts, both old and new, in two lectures: 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In addition to viewing numerous bed-sized quilts and wall hangings, there will be an opportunity for the public to bid on mini-quilts. The proceeds from this silent auction will go to local nonprofit organizations.

¢The Lawrence Branch of the NAACP will present monetary scholarships to its selected recipients during each school’s awards ceremonies.

The recipients are: Laura Parkinson, Lawrence High School, Eagle Award; Julie Council, Free State High School, Hope Award; and Jeffrey Seiger, Free State High School, Hope Award.

¢The Wednesday Afternoon Bridge Club played a stratified Mitchell movement at seven and a half tables on May 3. The game was directed by Virginia Seaver. Virginia Eddy and Phyllis Brownlee won first in A and B playing North-South. Harry Shaffer and Sam Pierron were second in A and Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges were third. Frances Vogel and Florine Creek won first in C and second in B.

¢Dave Piro and Paul Heitzman won first in A playing East-West. Lois Clark and Cathy Blumenfeld placed second in A and first in B and C. Virginia Seaver and Madelyn Jenks won third. Bebe Huxtable and Wanna Roszel won second in B and C.

¢The Wednesday Evening Bridge Club played a Howell movement at three and a half tables. Don Brennaman directed the May 3 game. John and Shirley Reese won first, followed by Al Ballard and Pat Musick. Earl Core and Mike Lee tied for third place with Harry Talley and Don Daugherty.

¢The Friday Afternoon Bridge Club played nine and a half tables in a stratified Mitchell movement. The May 5 game was directed by Don Brennaman. Shirley Reese and Betty Collier won first in A and B playing North-South. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley placed second in A and B and first in C. Clyde Romer and Kent McCullough won third in A and Jo Andersen and Betty Spalsbury won second in C and third in B.

Charlie Vaughn and Shari Krentzel won first in A at East-West, followed by Lois Clark and Cathy Blumenfeld who won second in A and first in B. Addie Nyquist and Russell LaForce won third in A and second in B, and Grant Sutton and Bob Dailey won first in C.

¢The Monday Evening Bridge Club was directed by Virginia Seaver. Eleven tables played a stratified Mitchell movement. At North-South, Shirley Reese and Chris Lane won first in A. Donna Johnson and James Masilamani won second and Bob Hemenway and Jim Zhang won third in A and first in both B and C. Martie Hartman and Pat Burgstahler won second in B and C.

Cathy and Mike Blumenfeld won first in A, B and C at East-West. Bob Dailey and Eldon Herd were second in A, followed by Barbara Merriam and Dorothy Netson who won third in A and second in B and C.

¢University Bridge Club announces the winners of its May 6 game. Hosts were Bob and Jean Etherton and Al and Carol Smith.

Blue winners were: Bebe Huxtable, first; George Bocquin, second; Al Smith, third; Harold Riehm, fourth; and Dale Kring, fifth.

Pink winners were: Mona Langlois, first; Donna Riehm, second; Alice Akin, third; Mary Jo Spotts, fourth; and Jo Hicks, fifth.
